Aberdeen Angus
Meatballs - Walthamstow Report 11 Jan 2007
Tonight's meeting marked the departure of Star racing, surely a loss to
the Stow. The other track bookies have decided to stump up the
additional fees to keep a new bookie out. Following the demise of
854/425, the turnover at the Stow has been said to have approximately
doubled, so you can well understand the track bookies stance. Tonight's
meeting also welcomed home one of Walthamstow's sons when Paul Millward
came home. Returning from sunny Spain to visit the folks and attend a
Journo re-union, Mr Millward had a successful evening and it was great
to see him.
An uninteresting opener fell to the Peter
Rich trained January Sailor, who led between the last two turns to
record a slow 29.54. The Div 2 marathon fell the way of Viparsheda.
After a dreadful start. Viparsheda
came home strongly to pick up Genesis Alix
on the run in. Greenlough Power repeated
his excellent trapping of last week in the 435, but this week stayed
on a lot better to hold off Rough Region, who despite not
running the last two bends fluently, nevertheless ran on quite well.
Diesel Lass destroyed a modest field in the Div 1 novice stayers,
going some way to restore the faith many had in him last week.
Strong Flow continued his rich vein of form, when picking up another
hurdles event. This was his fourth win in his last five ups, but in
truth many of his races have been weakly contested. Irate Kate made
all to land the novice marathon. The favvy Illustrious Blue
was out with the washing after a pedestrian break and was never
nearer than at the finish. A 21 day break may go some way to explain
her lack of early spark. Spoofy Doo looked to face a
straightforward task in the Div 2 Arc stakes, but broke modestly. Ballymac
Top (435 runner) cut out the early running before her stamina
gave way to succumb to Spoofy Doo late on. In one of the best
races of the night, the Dee and McCluskey owned Directors Chair
did an awful lot of running to land the puppy standard. Middle and
crowded at the traps, he showed some nice early pace and really put
it down to get on top at the line. Astute Gift did little
wrong, going down in a photo and Emporio Caesar kept on well
for 3rd. The well contested stayers event was a very scrappy event.
It went the way of Swift Maggie, with 5 of the 6 runners going over
the line within two lengths. Favourite Westmead Swift was not
fluent at the first bend and was never in the hunt as a two's on
favourite. Blonde Thunder cut out the early running in the veterans, but could not sustain the gallop and Clonbrin Show came
home comfortably to land this veterans event. The unbeaten Trained
Assassin gunned down her rivals to land an impressive fifth race
on the spin at the stow. She recorded 29.12 at Kilkenny on her debut
and it will take a good one to lower her colours. She showed the lot
tonight. Early pace and a real win to win when challenged, she
really impressed me tonight when pulling out more from the third
turn. Snappy Girl won an unexciting marathon before Greenfield
Hero brought home the bacon for me when landing the Div
1 maiden standard. Greenfield Hero showed blinding early foot
to stretch away from his rivals, His stamina looked to be giving way
before Ross Fortune was impeded between the last two turns. He
seemed to dig a little more out towards the end. The lucky last went
the way of the John Simpson trained Mullaghmore Girl.I
understand John has not been well lately, so this must have been a
welcome fillip.
Those
of you that are still awake must be wondering where the Aberdeen
Angus meatballs come in. Well, I can tell you that this is the food
of successful punters. (Well it was on it's debut) One of Tescos
"finest" range the Aberdeen Angus meatballs come with herb
potatoes, and are cooked with white wine, tomatoes and all
sorts.
