MEMORIAL HANDICAP (CLASS 3) (3yo+,0-95) Winner £6,799.80
Horses to consider
Orpenindeed - One of the least
exposed handicappers in this race today and one that has already
proven his liking for quick ground underfoot on a reasonably quick
six furlong test and with Marcus Botti becoming a name to follow on
the flat his unexposed son of Orpen is one that catches the eye in
this handicap. Fitted with the Tongue Strap he has shown plenty of
dash and a liking for a big field such as this. Ted Durcan is a eye
catching booking for the horse and with a more wise head doing the
steering this time he could go on to be tried in class 2 handicaps
which he has already shown to be capable of in with a good second at
Yarmouth behind the useful Royal Rocks. Likely to show plenty of
dash from the high side of the draw and could make his best of his
way home against the stand side rail with high numbers the place to
be drawn in this handicap.
Wyatt Earp - Should never be
discounted in these types of handicaps as he has recorded efforts in
the last 12 months that would have him easily winning this type of
race and its only a matter of time before he strikes for handicap
master Richard Fahey and with the yard having three runners in this
handicap there is a good chance that this horse comes out on top
with the added 3lbs being taken off by his pilot today. Its
interesting that Paul Hanagan has decided to desert this horse in
favour of Valley of the Moon who won two runs back and it could well
turn out the claimer has been put on this horse just to enhance his
chances at the weights. Set to carry 9 stone when the top weight is
a stone more in a class 3 handicap this horse is well in at the
weights today and given the way he stayed on without a clear run at
Lingfield where he found the surface taking him of his feet early on
suggested to me that the horse still has the heart for racing and
should go close at a price in today's handicap providing the jockey
can overcome draw 1 away from the pace.
Musaalem - Interesting to see this
unbeaten 4yo taking a drop back in trip after landing back to back 7
furlong races and with Richard Hills not here today it may be best
to catch him next time out when upped back in trip. Martin Dwyer who
is number 2 jockey for the owner is here today to take the ride on a
horse he steered to victory on debut and this gelded son of Aljabr
is likely to be kept to races as this as he has no future at Stud
and the horseman Hills is most probably kept for the more money
enhancing horses that need to be looked after for the powerful
owners breeding purposes. The drop back shouldn't be a problem for
this horse who has shown plenty of pace in his races and is likely
to help to make the pace in this handicap today, if settling well
enough he could potential be better then these with plenty
improvement likely to come from the horse and with a action that has
shown up well on the ground in the past he should improve again and
despite the negative drop could run a big race in a race that looks
well within his compass.
Obe Brave - Another runner for
Richard Fahey and this horse loves rattling fast ground and is
always at his best when caught fresh. Now with the Yorkshire based
trainer he should have a handicap sprint in him this season and with
the inclusion of the 7lbs claimer from the top of the weights it
wont be long before he is back racing of a lower weight against
rivals that are rated with in his league. Yet to fail to make the
frame at this level on the few starts he has had he is burdened with
top weight and the jockey isn't one that has caught my imagination
as being worth the claim yet and he makes the shortlist just based
on his class and the trainer who is strong form having a strong hand
in this race.
Verdict – Richard
Fahey has three runners in this handicap and they are all at a big
price, the one horse that has surprised me at being a big price is
fast ground lover WYATT EARP who is very much overpriced at 20-1 for
this handicap today, the horse has a tricky draw to overcome with
being drawn wide of the pace but Jamie Moriety has impressed many
with his tactical head and could well come across early to track the
strong pace before unleashing a turn of foot to put this to bed and
is superb value in this race. Orpindeed is one at a shorter price to
take a chance on as he look to be tailor made for class 2 to 3
handicaps and with the ground ideal has to be very much in the
mixing pot here. Musaalem and Obe Brave are the most interesting of
the rest.
Selection –
2 pts win WYATT EARP
@ 20-1 (BF22's)
