Heritage Handicap 18 Furlongs good to soft
The last of the big handicaps at headquarters today is a very
tricky race today with the quantity of runners. Plenty of these will
be campaigned over hurdles over the winter and last years winning
trainer Philip Hobbs has the ante post favourite in Fair Along, who
has been kept on the sidelines since running on well to claim second
in the Chester Cup, where he had Enjoy the Moment in behind. The
stronger galloping track may well be more suited to him today and
with a yard knowing what it takes to win this handicap, he could
well be up to following up Detroit City win last term.
The fear for Fair along must be his ability to drop the bit in
the middle of his races, which he done at both the premier jump
festivals last winter over fences. Also at Chester, he never really
threatened to win that race, despite running very well, but the
track will suit more today and that should enable him to recover
from a flat spot in mid race. Enjoy the Moment and Som Tala, along
with the Chester Cup winner Greenwich Meantime reposes here today
and at the weights, Fair Along is very likely to come out on top
here.
Samurai Way has a tricky draw to overcome, as Cumani looks for a
big handicap double after landing the Ebor with Purple Moon. Low
numbers are never the best places to come from in this handicap,
despite the long distance meaning there is plenty of recovery time.
Mudawin is a big price in this handicap and the Ebor winner from
last season may run very well today, and is interesting at a big
price, along with Doncaster staying handicap winner Desert Sea, who
has a low weight. Also, Dr Sharp, who ran a cracker in this race
last term. Secret Ploy, Caracciola and Afrad have all run with
credit this season, as they get ready for the jump seasons.
The 3yo in the field, Sunley Peace, has a solid looking chance
with a good performance in the Fenwolf stakes at Ascot behind
Distinction and he has won at Newmarket on the July course in good
style. The galloping nature of the Rowley Mile track and the stiff
finish out of the dip does suit for a local trainer. With him being
the only 3yo to take his chance, he must be highly thought of. He
could well buck the trends of the 3yos in this handicap. Macrovile
was given a tough task in the Irish St Leger and ran with much
credit when 2nd in the Northumberland plate. This was a very solid
run and if the ground was to be very soft under foot, he would be
very hard to beat, but he may just find others quickening better of
a strong gallop. Leg Spinner will run his race again.
