3.30 The Join Goodwood Owners
Group Stakes Handicap Class 4
Draw – Big field sprints rely, in the main, on where the
pace is drawn, rather then the draw bias at many tracks. That is no
different to the sprint track at Goodwood, where even though it
could be argued that there is a slight bias towards the high
numbers, it does help that the main body of pace does seem to be
towards the high numbers and the favoured far running rail.
1 – Don Pele – Ron Harris has
enjoyed a profitable season changing the fortunes of one time decent
handicappers but has of yet, tasted success with this horse despite
some decent efforts. Called upon is the champion jockey Ryan Moore
to find the key with this horse it wasn’t to long ago that Don Pele
was landing a class 2 handicap while with Kevin Ryan. Having shaped
well last time in this class when 2nd to She’s Minnie at Windsor
over five furlongs the form of that race has a average look to it
despite Diane’s Choice winning next time at Kempton. A return to six
furlongs in which he has done all his winning over is likely to suit
despite his consistent record over five furlongs and he finds
himself well handicapped on old form but will not have gained any
advantages for the 4lbs hike for that 2nd. Fully exposed he won’t
mind any rain even though all his winning has been done on a fast
surface.
Tissue Price – 10/1
2 – Mango Music – Returned to
form last time with a unlucky battling 2nd to Lady lily at the stiff
track of Pontefract. Dropped in level here in hope of finally
getting her head back in front she has ran well at this track before
narrowly losing out to Roman Quest for whom she meets on 2lbs worse
terms. Contested a average early season Listed Fillies event back in
May and ran successive poor races which led to a break. Handicapped
right on her form at this level she should have her optimum
conditions today to give a bold bid having been eased 3lbs for that
close 2nd. Frankie continues on her and she has a favourable draw in
17 here today.
Tissue Price – 4/1
3 – Rivor Kirov – Three duck
eggs next to his name means very little to this yard and if he were
to be fancied today the market would strongly point towards that.
Paul Doe is booked for the ride and is a interesting jockey booking
as he is a regular at this track and does ride it rather well in
general. Drawn to the right side of this field this gelding by
Soviet Star has had very little experience of running in big field
handicaps until recently and that has resulted in a dip in form.
Disappointing on sole effort at this track a more conventional
galloping track is better suiting to his style and he wouldn’t want
it to soft underfoot either. Exposed enough to know what to expect
he has failed in eight attempts to win at this level and even though
it is easier then the class 3 handicaps assigned to him last time he
could still do with some help in the handicap.
Tissue Price – 22/1
4 – Mason Ette – One of a few
unexposed types and have been a regular at this track in the short
career she has had so far. Twice placed from two efforts at this
track she has got to improve on those efforts to be winning this
handicap but is more then capable of doing so on this return from a
setback. Handles this type of ground on only try and wouldn’t mind
some rain having recorded her best effort with some cut when running
out a easy winner of a class 5 3yo handicap. Philip Robinson gets on
well with her and if she is ready after 103-day absence from the
racetrack and showing no ill effect from her setback she has a
chance if showing the required improvement against older
handicappers.
Tissue Price – 12/1
5 – Grand Show – Highly
progressive on the All weather and yet to show the same ability as
that on Turf, but did shape finally with some promise when chasing
home the effective class 4 scorer Matsunosuke at Sandown over five
furlongs last time. The form of that handicap has worked out very
well so far with She’s Minnie, Little Edward, Malapropisim and the
winner all winning since or next time out and as a result are all
around 10lbs higher then this day. With strong form like this the
step up to six furlongs in a slightly better race is surprising as
he runs of the same mark under similar conditions. Well handicapped
on all weather form he has recorded all his wins over six furlongs
so this further trip on a less stiff track may come off.
Tissue Price – 8/1
6 – Spanish Ace – Has
struggled in the handicap since kick starting his season with a
back-to-back win back in April in which he was raised a total of
13lbs for. Dropping back down the handicap after a series of poor
runs throughout the summer at this level and is below the second
winning mark recorded of that double after being dropped a further
2lbs for a improved effort behind Bo Mcginty over five furlongs at
Haydock then what he had previously shown. All recent wins have came
when dropped in to class 5 company and you would need to go back to
over 2yrs ago for the last time successful in this class. Poor
strike rate in fields this size he wouldn’t want the play on stamina
to much having failed to win over six furlongs in the past and best
on quick ground.
Tissue Price – 33/1
7 – Misaro – Has looked
pretty lifeless in recent weeks and looks in need of a break rather
then being kept on the go every week. Never travelling with much
conviction last time at Bath and seems to be at his best when
getting the rail and leading them along. Missed the kick when
contesting his only run at this track at the Goodwood meeting and
other 5F here if you miss the break it is race over in a big field
sprint handicap so to finish only 3L behind the winner that day was
a good effort. Back over six furlongs for today’s race he has turf
conditions to his liking today and wouldn’t mind if there was a
slight ease in the ground. 5lbs higher then when last winning on
turf he has been dropped a further 3lbs in the handicap from last
run and is now close to his winning mark on the all weather in which
he was so impressive in doing. Matthew Davies helps with further
easing in the weights but he isn’t showing encouraging signs of late
and may need freshening up before winning again.
Tissue Price – 20/1
8 – Angel Sprints – Well
beaten when last seen under a 4lbs penalty at Newmarket when well
beaten by the progressive Esteem Machine, hard to know what to make
of that run as this mare has often ran with credit on soft racing
ground in the past and may have just found the stiff track under
those conditions difficult to handle. The 4lbs rise from that win at
Lingfield was obtained by mainly beating exposed rivals and the 2nd
has gone up in the weights since to make the weight swing in favour
of Angel Sprints to confirm form. Won with a bit in hand that day at
Lingfield and is still below his best winning mark from over 2yrs
ago when a 3yo, but he is exposed and little uncertain if he holds
that ability anymore. Suited to good racing ground and likes six
furlongs, one of his best efforts has been at this track in which he
ran so well over five furlongs against the Lord. Well Drawn and
partnered with William Buick today he is setup for a big run but
will need to get close to his best for a small yard.
Tissue price – 16/1
9 – Sacre Coeur – Non-Runner
10 – Oranmore Castle – Bumped
into a rival that has returned to form well handicapped last time
and will be trying to do the same thing here as he finds himself
still below his last winning mark despite the 2lbs penalty he picked
up for finishing 2nd to Cornus the run before last. Ahead of the
handicapper last time he could only manage 4th staying on at the
same pace over five furlongs at Doncaster and is a shade better
horse over the minimum distance. Back up to six today he handles all
ground to a consistent level and once was a class 3 winner of this
current mark. Wins in turn around this mark he isn’t a progressive
type, but he does hold his form well and his turn for getting his
head in front can’t be far off when given five furlongs on a stiffer
galloping track.
Tissue Price – 16/1
11 – Gwilyn – Runs with so
much consistence that the handicapper holds his mark up and is no
better of with Angel Sprints for the Lingfield running after being
penalised 3lbs for a 2nd to Matsunosuke who won was relative ease at
Sandown. No match for Angel Sprints on the Turf course at lingfield
its hard to see this track in which he runs for the first time
bringing him along further against a experienced Goodwood
handicapper. Would need it to stay dry to increase chances as Soft
ground has been kept at distance in the past. As effective over six
as five furlongs he needs some help from the handicapper to have a
chance of landing this quite competitive affair, but should run his
race yet again.
Tissue Price – 20/1
12 – Cheap Street – Three
time winner over six furlongs with two of the wins coming at
Newmarket on the stiff galloping track. Yet to get within 5lbs of
that form this season he has been tried over further in the last
four runs and based on those efforts the drop back in trip should
help. Quite tough opponents have been assigned to him this season in
class 3 and 2 handicaps so the return to six furlong in weaker races
then when signing off should see him in a much better light. Another
3lbs dropped in the handicap means he is now 7lbs below when last
winning as a two year old and the conditions should suit. However
2yo form can be misleading as they progress so much between two and
three years old. Jimmy Fortune eye-catching booking and draw has
been kind.
Tissue Price – 13/1
13 – Romany Nights – John
Egan is always a booking that catches the eye for Gay Kellaway and
his record on this horse is quite impressive given how often these
seasoned sprinters flop in and out of form. Winner here back in May
2006 when winning off a mark of 77 (3lbs lower now) he had Ornamore
Castle well back in the field in receipt of weight. Likely to
confirm that form despite not being in the same form this time
around he could easily return to form for the return of John Egan,
the tongue tie and the return to this track. Well beaten by Misaro
at Kempton in which that rival had run of race, he is more then
capable on these favoured terms of reversing that form on turf. Drop
in class an added bonus.
Tissue Price – 12/1
14 – Cativo Cavallino – An impressive 5L scorer at lingfield on
the all weather last month beating a pretty moderate bunch, but is
worth consideration against rivals that would be closer to ability.
Stepped up in trip last time to contest a race at this level he
shaped with much promise having lead for most of the race and tiring
in the final furlong. Drop back to favoured 6F should help him
attempt to overcome an 11lb high mark he was penalised for that 5L
victory. Drawn well to help force the pace under his usually pilot
he has to improve on the two lasts obtained at this track, but there
may have been valid excuses for those runs over further trip and
with the ground coming right he could be up to running another big
race.
Tissue Price – 16/1
15 – Fairfield Princess –
Kept on the go as a 2yo and never really struck gold on to many
occasions, changed hands and kept to limited amount of races as a
3yo she is yet to give any indication that she is capable of landing
a handicap at this level yet for new trainer. Best effort this term
has most probably been the 8th of 11 at Ascot over a stiff 5
furlongs in which she had several of today’s rivals in front of her.
A massive drop in the weights topped off with an extra 4lbs taken
off for the tailing off last time at Newbury. A return to the all
weather may be the best time to catch her in a small field she can
dictate the pace in like she did when beating Crystal Gazer.
Tissue Price – 50/1
16 – Linda Green – Another
that didn’t run any sort of race at Newmarket behind Esteem Machine
and has to be regarded as disappointing having ran well at other
stiff tracks. Slight give in the ground suits and it would be no
surprise to see her bounce back to form as many mares do. Goodwood
has seen here sweep home well in the past as she has to be produced
to challenge over six furlongs. Back to within 1lb of when winning
at Bath she should be thereabouts in this handicap if getting the
run through. Exposed up to her best she is likely however to find
one to good not certain to reverse form with Romany Nights and Angel
Sprints.
Tissue Price – 16/1
17 – Dixieland Boy – Shaped
like he was a winner in waiting at Bath last time when travelling up
so strongly just not to find as much as expected and is certain to
have improved again on turf for that run. Still a maiden on Turf he
took a lifetime to break his maiden tag on the all weather, which he
eventually did under today’s Jockey Steve Drowne. Suited to turf
with some cut in it, he has more to come and the 3lbs rise may be
easily compensated by improvement. A tougher race then last time the
form of that Bath run hasn’t been franked well and if all racing
again I would expect Dixieland Boy to come out on top.
Tissue Price – 16/1
18 – Avening – Beaten 7L by
Matsunosuke at Sandown last time out this French Import needs to
find some form after showing very little so far for Eve Johnson
Houghton So far. Stepping up to six furlongs for the first time for
this trainer he is yet to win over this trip in eleven tries and
looks one to best watched until showing some ability to win a class
4 handicap.
Tissue Price – 40/1
1 9 – Roman Quest – Another
course and distance winner and trained by Hugh Morrison who is
making his name with sprinters this season. Been tried over further
this season than his favoured six furlongs (where both his wins have
been recorded) and should appreciate this drop back in trip today.
The form he has achieved over six furlongs last season he hasn’t
built upon. Hiis best two efforts this season have actually come
over 5F and 7F. Due a improved run over six furlongs this season, he
finds himself 3lbs lower than when beating Mango Music over course
and distance last season, and is better off at the weights. Suited
to slightly quicker ground than good the rain that has got into the
ground wont help his cause, but from a low racing weight, and if not
to overly testing, he should be able to handle it to a solid enough
level, having shown up well in the past. Potentially dangers of
bottom weight given his performance at the track in the past and
plenty of cover should suit. Drawn with the pace.
Tissue Price – 7/1
Tissue – Mango Music 4/1, Roman Quest 7/1, Grand Show 8/1,
Don Pele 10/1, Romany Nights, Mason Ette 12/1, Cheap Street 13/1,
Dixieland boy, Linda Green, Cativo Cavalinio, Ornamore Castle, Angel
Sprints 16/1, Gwilyn, Misaro 20/1, River Kirov 22/1, Spanish Ace
33/1, Avening 40/1, Fairfield Princess 50/1
Verdict – A large
run of the mill handicap, where you are unlikely to get a runner
racking up a progressive streak in heritage handicap class and they
often win in their turn. With quite a few of these having not won
for a few runs now, there is a lot of horses, well handicapped on
old form, contesting this race today and with one of only a few
improvers in the field and a non-runner already, this race may be
taken by a horse that has fallen down to a attractive mark.
