Saturday Race Previews 21 July 2007

2.05 Market Rasen - Summer Hurdle 17F 110 Yards class 2 Handicap Hurdle good to soft / soft (4yo 0-145)

A competitive opening handicap to this summer national hunt race card, where Yes Sir the summer plate winner 12 months ago, heads the weights today for Peter Bowen and makes this handicap a very open event at the weights. Those at the bottom of the weights could well benefit in this strongly ran race around a sharp track, where you won't want to be too far of the pace, as those up front often get a handy lead turning in. Orpen Wide went well last time under Tom O'Brien who is on the top weight today and the return of David Cullinane, who takes a handy 7lbs of the back of this horse, has him in with a chance at a track where he has gone well at in the past, without winning. He looks likely to give it another bold bid today.

Lord Baskervile, a winner at Aintree ran well behind Capitana last time, could go well under his usual rider, with that race stacking up well. However, there has to be a concern about his form going right handed. Motive has a low weight and has a touch of class from the flat. He has claims at the foot of the weights. Dishdasha, ridden by Richard Johnson today for Alison Thorpe, is very closely matched with Mind How you go, on running here last month. Mind How you Go benefited from the driving finish by Tony Mccoy and there is a chance that the form will be reversed this time. Prince Arry, for David Pipe is interesting, having won easy last time out in May and has been held back for a handicap such as this and has a low weight and good right-handed track form.

Advised bets - Prince Arry 1pt win @ 16-1 (19BF) & Orpen Wide 1pt @ 16-1 (22BF)

2.35 Plantation Stud stakes (Regiestered as the Aphrodite stakes) Listed race class 1 (3yo+) 12F Good

This race revolves around the ability of the well bred Turbo Linn, who has a penalty to carry in this listed race following an impressive run away victory here at the July meeting. She is likely to be very hard to beat in this race today, as she is very much on the roll, having won her bumpers and then her maiden race in good style for Alan Swinbank, who is making his name with this type of horse. He does very well with his middle distance runners. Under The rainbow finished 4L back in 2nd at the July meeting and has a pull in the weights with the favourite, but may be better over a couple of furlongs more, as he is rather one paced.

The main dangers may lie with the Mark Johnston runner Majounes Song, who ran well in a group 2 race last time and will appreciate this drop back down to listed company. Even though she is more exposed then Turbo Linn, she has performances in the book to give her claims over this trip today. Any ease in the ground will give Green Room a big chance in this race today, having really shown a nice attitude to racing when beating Trick or Treat over this trip and is another who could well go close, if returning to that form with the ground slower than in his recent flops. Impetious has been given tough task and to her credit she hasn't been disgraced, with a good 5th at Saint Cloud last time in a group 2 race and could run a big race today and is another who could well benefit if the favourite was to struggle under her penalty.

Advised bets - Majounes Song 1pt @ 8-1 (BF9)

3.05 The Coolus Air Conditioning Handicap Class 2 (3yo 0-100) 1M Good

The Illes could go well for the Hills today at the weights, if returning to his best form as a 2yo and should be monitored in the market. However the talented Escape route is likely to be all the rage in this race today, being Pricewise and for top 3yo handicap trainer at this track John Godson.

In a open handicap , where Mark Johnston Annemasse heads the weights today, Classira, Lazy Darren, Sign Of The Cross and Shot Gun, all have solid mile form already in the book, to take on the favourite over his first start at this trip today. James Fanshawe's 3yo handicap form isn't inspiring (0-32) at this track and his Sign Of The Cross never really picked up from the rear last time at Thirsk, with conditions under foot softer then ideal. Likely to give a better show this time, he is of interest, as there is more expected to come. While Lazy Darren from the in-form Richard Hannon stable, could well go well at a big price, having ran a good race in defeat behind Artimino, who went well here at the July meeting. Shot Gun will improve for the return to turf, having ran well over a mile on the all weather track at Kempton, but this could be best left to Classira, who finally lost her maiden tag, at the 3rd time of asking, when travelling up well before having to battle on to win. She will be better suited to a stronger pace and will have improved for that run last time. This strong travelling type should go close in this open handicap. Al Khaleej drops back in trip and should have a say in this race, after impressing last time in defeat, while the Hills are double handed in this race, with Folly Lodge.

Advised bets - Classira 1pt @ 7-1 (9BF) & Lazy Darren 1pt @ 20-1 (BF20)

3.35 Invesco Perpetual Fillies handicap Class 3 (3yo+ 0-95) 6F Good

The warm up to the feature race on this Saturday and a good looking handicap with Folga off top weight not totally out of this race, at this level today. He could go well at a price for James Given. Bee Eater is an interesting improver in the race and could be ahead of the handicapper, now back racing against her own age group and may find a few of these more progressive rival ahead of here in terms of ability, even though she may turn out to be the best long term prospect.

Cape is likely to go well back at a track that suits her style of racing. The trainer does well in all age handicaps, compared to his 3yo handicap form at this July course. Flopped last time at Folkestone, when expected to carry on her progression and has to overcome that run, where she never looked comfortable. Sirens Gift dropped down to this level, and after being given some tough tasks, has to go well at this level and may turn out to be the best of the 3yo's in this race today. Sparkling eyes is at the right end of the weights to go well for Clive Brittain, whereas Danella ran well last time, but this looks a harder test. Woodnook is talented on her time and has an outside chance.

Advised bet - Folga 1pt @ 16-1 (BF19)

3.40 The Summer Plate Handicap chase (listed race) 22F 110yrds Good to soft / soft

A good mix of experienced and improving types in this handicap feature race of today's racing. This promises to be a much better contest then last years run away success for the novice Yes Sir, who has struggled ever since this race. Peter Bowen has laid his team out to retain this prize, with 5 chasers in this field. Going by the Jockey bookings, the stout staying type Lankawi looks to be the pick of those at the weights today. However, he does look like the type that will improve for a stiff test of stamina, with the pick of his form coming over 3M.

The one of Peter Bowen's that makes most appeal to me, is the veteran Ballycassidy, who ran a good prep race in a staying national last time. The drop back to this trip, where he is a course and distance winner, should suit, with the helping at the weights from Paul Nicholls runner Hoo La Baloo, who shoulders top weight, in a bid to help his stable mate out at the weights. Tommy Spar, another for trainer Peter Bowen, is fancied to turn around the form with stable mate Iron Man and is another who has to enter the equation. Little Big Horse is a course specialist, and is handicapped to go well in this race today, which he has been laid out for. He looks a natural place bet in this race, with much in favour for Sue Smith.

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls looks to have given Nippy Des Mottes a good chance at the weights, by his other runner shouldering top weight in this handicap and this claimer, who had a tutorial on the horse last time at Wincanton, when just denied by Green Finger at Worcester, who has been passed over by trainer for this rematch, in favour of 5 others. Suited to this trip, and if jumping around with a low weight, must have a good chance today to give Paul Nicholls a big early prize, in his bid to retain his title, which should be a formality. Handy Money is another to have a chance, with Alan King sparingly sending chasers here, but often does well when he does, and his Handy Money comes here with a live chance. Tango Royal, the sole reprehensive for David Pipe in this handicap, knows his way around here, having landed this prize before and even though an 11yo now,  is taken to make his presence felt in a open handicap.

Advised bets - Ballycassidy 1pt @ 14-1 (BF22) & Nippy Des Mottes 1pt @ 12-1 (BF13)

Best of luck all
