Thirsk – Class 3 Handicap (4yo+ 0-90) 12F
1 – Active Asset –
Started the season well after transferring from Mick Channon yard to
Micky Quinn yard during the winter months and scored over today’s
trip when landing a conditions stakes race on the Lingfield Polly
track. Yet to win a handicap over a mark of 80 he has been running
well of late in and around this class of handicap and in a very
similar type of handicap last time when 3rd to Rayhani in
which he posted close to his personnel best performance given the
handicap high mark of 87. Off the same mark here he handles small
muddling fields such as this as long as they go a fair gallop, which
is always a possibility with Clueless in the race. The conditions
should be ideal if staying on the fast side of good and may well
build on what is quite a good record over this trip so far (123).

2 – Clueless
– Not run on the flat for 611 days but with recent hurdles form to
his name he should be fit for this first run on the flat in nearly
2yrs. Trained now by Nicky Richards a top National Hunt trainer he
is a interesting runner in this handicap as he returns on the same
mark he won a class 3 handicap at York beating a whole host of
decent 10F handicappers. Unsure on whether he retains the sort
ability as old he may settle better now then previously on the flat
in which he took a keen hold in his races and what quite often
happens is that a horse strengthens and gains more improvement for
the addition of hurdling into his game (Blythe knight as a example).
The 12F trip shouldn’t be to much of a problem on good to firm
ground and the track should suit his style of racing so he isn’t
without a serious chance under a capable rider claiming 5lbs off his
handicap mark.

3 – Florimund
– in the famous silks of Mr Abdulla, Florimund has the profile of
the most progressive horse in the field being unexposed and by
Saddlers Wells. Trainer very rarely leaves a prize behind at this
course with a 50% all age handicap strike rate. Not one of the
owners best chances on the day with the absence of Richard Hughes
from the saddle Florimund may be able to be forgiven the poor
performance at Newmarket last time when beaten 33L by Senor Duty in
a higher class handicap then the one contesting today. The 5th
previously in a smaller field behind the useful Wannabe Posh over
today’s trip gives him better claims. Best efforts have come when
fresh and its to be seen as to how this short break effects him as
he has been beaten some way when running with in a month of his last
run, It’s is however to early days to have that set in stone. Ease
in the ground may bring him along further but these quicker
conditions shouldn’t have him struggling too much but has to show
the improvement that is expected.

4 – Tcherina
– Good solid winner of a 12F class 4 handicap at York last time
when beating of High Treason well enough to suggest it was a decent
effort and the 2nd franked the form in good style in a
top handicap at the Dante meeting so the form of this race looks
likely to hold up well. Luna Landing is the only one from that race
to repose on 12lbs better terms this time around. The distance
between them wasn’t overly far but enough to suggest that Tcherina
can confirm the form on lbs to length basis. Up 7lbs for the win she
finds herself 4lbs higher then best winning mark and is fairly
exposed to all now. Stays the trip and has handled the ground in the
past she isn’t helped by her jockey-narrowing claim. The more
lively ground she may not be at her best and the galloping track of
York does seem to have her at her very best so the change of track
may give the likes of Luna Landing a chance.

5 – Luna Landing
– An impressive scorer at Catterick when winning of a 2lbs lower
mark from the average Always Baileys and has struggled since but
behind some decent handicappers. Finished twice behind Tcherina in
York handicaps he is much better weighted for today’s race then
before and is closely weighted to the run behind Leslingtaylor in
which neither handled the soft conditions to well. The quicker
surface should help Luna Landing having won twice on this ground and
the trip is ok, however you do have to draw a negative from the
trainer form of 0-13 in all age handicaps’ at this track.

6 – Just Observing
– Winner last time out when narrowly beating Sin City over 10F at
Pontefract and takes a step up in trip back to 12F in which he has a
3rd & 2nd to his name with the 2nd
coming in a seller. Already tried over hurdles 5 times to no success
for last trainer Pat Haslam and has ran many creditable efforts on
ground such as this and wouldn’t want it any slower. Under a
penalty for the win last time out in which the 2nd ran a
cracker behind all the good a Musselbrugh course specialist so there
maybe more to come from Just Observing who ran a creditable effort
when 3rd over course and distance back in April but this
does rate as a step up in class and one in which he needs to show
improvement in to win at a higher level.

7 – Shape Up
– Well exposed 7yo who can make the running if given a uncontested
lead and one that seems to get on very well with today’s jockey
(26123) and has a massive 19lbs swing in the weights with Active
Asset for a 8.5L defeat over 11 furlongs at Haydock so has to have a
chance at the weights here today. Upped two classes after being
effective in lower grade races he may find the going today on the
lively side with a 0-13 record when the firm has appeared in the
going description. 8lbs higher in the handicap then last win he is
respected over this 12F.
My Tissue Price – 7/1
Verdict – Open
handicap in which a lot depends on the ability of Clueless on this
return to flat handicaps and after a good effort last time over
hurdles there could be quite a fair bit of value based on the 6/1 on
offer on Betfair. Tcherina chance will improve for any rain and
holds no value at 11/4 while Florimund even though entitled to
improvement just looks as the price is based around connections more
then raw ability. Just Observing is interesting based on last run
and is the other that has a standout price around 9/1.
